El Paso sucks

I wanted to congratulate Victor Santana on a great article this past Thursday, April 27. I found "Greek life at UTEP is a joke" to be a very revealing look into UTEP's stature as a second rate school.

As a devoted sports fan, I had hoped to see one day at UTEP the same fan enthusiasm you see at other schools.

For example, standing room-only Midnight Madness pep rallies prior to the beginning of basketball season, a 50,000 strong audience at the nationally-televised spring football game, students missing classes to camp out for tickets, or the excitement of being invited to a BCS game.

Unfortunately at UTEP, success means mere participation in the NCAA tournament, or in a mediocre bowl game facing a team from the MAC Conference. Tenessee packs its home football games with 100,000 people. UCLA has won 11 basketball titles and Florida has won basketball and football championships in the same academic year.

In conversations I've had with UTEP students, some had no idea who Trevor Vittatoe is. This is not the case in South Bend, Ind. Why stop at UTEP Greek life and UTEP athletics?

Let's go over how much El Paso sucks. As a former member of the Navy, I have lived in Chicago, near Washington, DC, Virginia Beach and San Diego. Washington's Smithsonian museums are enormous, Chicago's Michigan Avenue's Christmas lights are amazing, as well as their celebration of St. Patrick's day. San Diego's weather is so pleasant that you never have to use your home or car air conditioning.

I am proud to be a native El Pasoan, student at UTEP and fan of UTEP athletics, but come on. If you want a real sports collegiate experience, or a big city lifestyle, you aren't getting one at UTEP or in El Paso.
