Job market remains positive for class of 2008

BETHLEHEM, Pa.-Even in light of the economy's recent downturn, there is still good news for the class of 2008, according to a new report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

The spring 2008 issue of NACE's Salary Survey shows that, for the most part, average starting salary offers to 2007-2008 graduates are on the rise.

Student wins national theater design competition Christian Contreras, senior electronic media major, has won the Barbizon Award for Excellence in Lighting Design at the 2008 National Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C. His entry, lighting design for the Department of Theatre, Dance and Film's production of "Cloud Techtonics" beat out seven other students from across the country.

After winning only 14 games in 2006-07, this year's men's basketball team has some accomplishments to boast about that they did not have last season.

UTEP finished the year with 19 wins, a winning record. The Miners got revenge by winning both meetings against arch rival New Mexico State after losing twice to the Aggies the year before.

At the start of the season, the Miner women's basketball team set goals for the 2007-08 season. The Miners chased down every last one of them and achieved what many thought was impossible.

UTEP finished their unbelievable 2007-08 campaign ranked in the top 25 in both national polls - 23rd AP and 25th ESPN/USA Today.

The men and women's track and field teams have stepped off on a good note for the 2008 outdoor season. While the 2007 season brought success with Patrick Mutai, Japheth Ng'ojoy, Hans Eriksson, Halimat Ismaila, Nina Schvedoff and Kelly Young, it looks like 2008 has a better chance of clearing for the gold this year in the NCAA Outdoor Championship.

The tennis team raced out to an early 7-2 season start, but away matches, injuries and inconsistencies slowed their pace to a 9-11 overall record. The Miners' season ended after making an early exit in the first round of the Conference USA tournament.

The Miners may have appeared sub-par in box scores, but what went unnoticed was the development of the players.

Rifle team closes a rough season

It has been a rough semester for the women's rifle team. The Miners came back from their winter holiday without a place to train. Renovations were underway to make the shooting range electronically capable of measuring shots. Also, four more firing points were added, allowing the range to meet the national minimum of 12 targets.

For a team that wasn't actually "in-season" during the spring, this semester was certainly eventful for UTEP football.

After the disappointment of a half-dozen losses to cap off 2007, changes were in order for Mike Price's staff. Gone are defensive coaches Tim Hundley, Ikaika Malloe and Tim Duffie, as well as Lawrence Livingston and Eric Price from the offensive side.

Hanany C-USA Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week. On Tuesday, high jumper Mickael Hanany was chosen as the Conference USA Men's Track Athlete of the Week. At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Hanany finished second in the high jump with the NCAA regional-qualifying clearance of 7 feet, 5 inches.

On my first day at UTEP, I walked into a 7:30 a.m. math class only find it had been cancelled due to lack of enrollment. I left the classroom unsure of what to do and concerned that I had already managed to fall behind. Ridiculous, I know, but such was my personality.

The letter Claudia Gonzalez submitted to the Prospector entitled "Election Deceptions" is not true, but propaganda by her, as she is part of Students for Reform.

Although Claudia did not write or state that she is part of Students for Reform, everybody knows she has been campaigning with them and using herself to smear the name of PIC without officially involving Students for Reform.
