    Photos: ‘X’ in Juárez inaugurated

    La Plaza de la Mexicanidad was inaugurated May 24 in Ciudad Juárez to an estimated audience of 120 thousand people. The El Paso Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alondra de la Parra presented a repertoire accompanied by Natalia Lafourcade, Ely Guerra and Denise Gutierrez for the occasion in the square’s amphitheater.

    WASHINGTON - A group of House members wants to ensure border security before discussing comprehensive immigration reform.

    On May 14, members of the House Homeland Security Committee amended and approved the Border Security Results Act of 2013 and sent it to the floor.

        On May 10 there was an open house at the Acacia room Union East to address campus renovations.   The following are areas that will be affected and the dates of construction:   Wiggins Plaza Started March 2013, completion Aug. 2013   There are two phases to the Wiggins Plaza.

    Centennial Lecture Series: Alfredo Corchado

    Alfredo Corchado, the Mexican bureau chief for the Dallas Morning News, spoke of his upcoming book, “Midnight in Mexico” and his experience as a journalist working in Mexico as part of the Centennial Lecture Series May 9 at the UGLC.  After he thanked the audience, his family, friends and professors for attending the lecture, he told of how he was not able to come up with the beginning for the book and how he doubted himself while writing it.

    Top Ten Seniors value UTEP’s education

       The Top Ten Seniors award identifies 10 graduating students who have excelled not only academically, but also through their remarkable leadership and community service, all while maintaining a high grade-point average throughout their undergraduate career at UTEP.

    Centennial construction underway

       A section of University Avenue will close to vehicular traffic permanently on May 20, marking a major phase in the construction for the centennial transformation of the UTEP campus. Along with University Avenue, the construction on Wiggins Road will finish in May and preliminary work on Schuster Avenue will begin, a project that will take about two years, according to Keith Erekson, executive director of the centennial celebration.

    A new SGA structure

       This year’s Student Government Association elections resulted in a change in leadership. Current Liberal Arts senator, Paulina Lopez, was elected SGA president. Although her term does not begin until June 1, Lopez, junior organizational communication major, has already begun working on changes to the SGA.

    Hold on all doctoral program proposals

       The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has implemented a policy that penalizes state universities that do not meet the state average in graduation rates. UTEP is currently one of the universities that is being penalized and therefore cannot submit any new doctoral program proposals until graduation rates are calculated next fiscal year.

    UTEP's Christopher Washburn involved in fight with local bar bouncer

    Freshman forward, Christopher Washburn, 19, was involved in an assault against a bouncer at The Palomino, a bar located on 110 E. Robinson Ave. on May 12, according to a police report from the El Paso Police Department.

    Men's track and field claims title at championships

    UTEP Men's track and field team conquered the 2013 Conference USA Outdoor championships on May 12 at the Rice Track Stadium in Houston, Texas.

    The Miners finished with a total of 166.5 points, ahead of Houston (152.5), and Tulsa (147).

    UTEP softball in search for new head coach

    On May 9, UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull announced that a search has begun for a new softball coach. Kathleen and James Rodriguez co-head coached the Miners from 2004-13. They were the first coaches for the program.

    Miners in good shape for championships

       The UTEP track and field team is set to have a strong showing at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 9-12, which will be hosted by Rice University in Houston, Texas. “Right now we’re just getting ready, we don’t have too much time to prepare so we need to fix what we can,” said senior distance runner, Risper Kimaiyo.

    Seniors hang up their cleats and look ahead

       Walking into the women’s soccer locker room for one last time, seniors Tess Hall and Brittany Kindzierski, haven’t been hit with the realization that after four years of playing soccer at the collegiate level, it has finally ended for them.

    Leaving everything out on the golf course

       As a senior golfer Devin Miertschin approached the final 18th hole at the Conference USA Championships in Texarkana, Ark., realizing it would be the last time he made a putt for UTEP.  He said he was almost tearing up as he walked down the fairway with his coach of two years, Scott Lieberwirth.

    Pushing the limit

       After suffering a bad motocycle accident, James Ketchell, 31, of London, UK decided he would row across the Atlantic. It was an unsual thought to run across the mind of someone who had just broken both of his legs and ankle. Doctors told him he would not be able to cope with strenuous, prolonged physical activity.

    Four amazing years at UTEP

       It has been four amazing years at UTEP and I have enjoyed every minute of it. On May 18, I will be the first in my immediate family to have a college degree. I feel very blessed by the Lord and by the people who care about me and have supported my decisions.

    ‘Evita’ on UTEP’s stage, successful rendition of Broadway’s play

       Out of total darkness, the cast mournfully shouted, “Evita! Evita! Evita!” The stage and the characters resembled death and sadness. Then Che, the cynical narrator, broke the trance. With his entrance, Tim Rice’s and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production was underway.

       The Network, a restaurant with the tagline “Where Professionals Play” located on 317 East Mills Ave., is offering El Pasoans the feel of classic authenticity with the taste of modern contemporary gourmet. Frank Montes, owner of The Network, became interested in the vacant space and decided to make a proposal to the landowner.

       The first image that Derek Cianfrance presents in his newest drama “The Place Beyond the Pines” is that of a stuntman motorcyclist named Luke (Ryan Gosling, in a vulnerably cool performance) taking a deep breath and doing knife tricks before his big stunt show.

      Julio Ortega, director de Estudios Hispanos en Brown University, presentó su ponencia magistral, “Carlos Fuentes Entre Fronteras: México, EEUU y España en el Mapa Literario del Siglo XXI” el 8 de marzo en el UGLC.  La ponencia se realizó por el Departamento de Lenguas y Lingüística como parte de la serie de conferencias que se ofrecen para el centenario de la universidad y el XVIII Congreso de Literatura Mexicana Contemporánea en UTEP.

    Sam Donaldson impartirá clase en UTEP

       Sam Donalson, ex alumno de UTEP y ex corresponsal de la Casa Blanca impartirá una clase de comunicación política este semestre en la escuela de comunicación de UTEP. “Establecimos un acuerdo extraoficial durante su visita el año pasado en donde decidimos que visitaría UTEP tres veces durante este semestre para enseñar mi clase de comunicación,” dijo Richard Pineda, profesor y director asociado del Centro de Estudios de Comunicación Sam Donaldson.
