The world’s second – ranked golfer without a PGA Tour victory finally broke the golf top level with his first major championship on a Sunday. Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2022 US Open at the Country Club in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, winning the Under-6s competition without two birds and two bookies in the final seven holes.
Fitzpatrick, 27, won the trophy with a stroke of his 54-hole co-captain Will Zalatoris and 2022 Masters champion Scotty Scheffler. After taking home a US amateur who hosted USGA on the same course in 2013, he won a career-building event at The Country Club for the second time.
Number in the official world golf rankings. The 18-year-old has already beaten Fitzpatrick at the US Open after a strong season at the already major championships. The Englishman had previously finished T14 at the Masters in April and T5 at the PGA Championships last month.
The name of this week’s Fitzpatrick game is consistency. While the others came out with significantly fewer rounds at the start of the match, he scored 70 runs in 2 under-70s across the first 36 holes on Friday, recording a second 68 on the day before moving to take the co-lead.
Fitzpatrick was up and down all nine Sundays ahead, and he seemed to be sitting outside a cup presentation again to start with two bogies behind.
In contrast, Fitzpatrick recovered immediately and took a two-stroke lead on the field after the Birdies in 13th and 15th place. Although Jaladoris and Scheffler both pulled together after hitting the birds, Fitzpatrick did not let up.
He quietly parted ways on the 16th and 17th, and after finding a reasonable bunker on the 18th, made a major saving in green. Fitzpatrick missed an 18-foot birdie pudding, but Jalatoris missed a similar 14-foot puddle with a hair.
