The Houston Astros and general manager James Glick have parted ways, the team announced Friday. ESPN reported that they fired assistant general manager Scott Powers. Here’s what you need to know:
- Click was offered a one-year contract to stay with the company through 2023 but declined.
- Manager Dusty Baker, 73, agreed to a one-year deal to return earlier this week.
- The last president of baseball operations to lose his job right after winning the World Series in 1947 was the Yankees’ Larry MacPhail — he resigned.
Backstory
Astros owner Jim Crane, Jan. In 2020, he clicked to stabilize the Astros following a sign-stealing scandal. Klick did just that, compiling the most regular season wins of his three-year tenure in the American League and finishing an 11-2 postseason with a 2022 World Series title.
After Friday’s announcement, Crane thanked Click for these contributions to the team.
“We are grateful for all of James’ contributions,” Crane said. “We’ve had great success in each of his three seasons and James has been a key part of that success. I want to personally thank him and wish him and his family the best going forward.
The Astros fired assistant general manager Scott Powers, according to a source familiar with the decision. He was a former executive with Powers Cheaters Brought in by Click in January.
Was this expected?
At the GM meetings in Las Vegas this week, the uncertainty surrounding the Click was the talk of the executive class. Tournament officials were dismayed when Crane’s team won a one-year extension to Klick.
On the surface, running the Astros looks like one of the game’s primary positions. But Crane’s reluctance to reward a hire like Klick — who inherited a great team from fired predecessor Jeff Luhnow, kept the center intact and built a dynamic bullpen in 2022 — was well looked after by other executives. It will be interesting to see how the next search for a new general manager goes. The Astros have already lost key personnel Pete Putilla and Oz Ocampo this winter. – McCullough

There has been speculation about Crane trying to hire David Stearns Milwaukeeof Baseball Operations Department. Earlier this winter, Stearns stepped down from the position, citing burnout. He is under contract with the Brewers through 2023.— McCullough

As for Click, he may not immediately join another job as a general manager. But he was a well-respected figure even before taking office in Houston. His former teammates from Tampa Bay now run the Dodgers, Red socks And brewers – in addition Rays. Like Alex Anthopoulos did for the Dodgers between his time in Toronto and Atlanta, Klick could spend time in an advisory role before running another club. — McCullough
