LIV Golf last week unveiled the field list for its first event at the Centurion Golf Club in London from June 9-11. Six names were left out of the list as only 42 players were made public for the 48-man, 12-team tournament. There was a lot of speculation surrounding the omission of half a dozen names, but with only five qualifiers on the Asian tour set aside, LIV Golf announced on Monday that Phil Mickelson would be the finalist. Despite the delay, it was always believed that Michelson’s name would feature on the entry list because he was a key player in leading the competition tour efforts alongside LIV Golf CEO Greg Norm. The 51-year-old has not been in the public eye since he made controversial remarks about the Saudi regime in late February.

Mickelson’s last taste of the PGA tour came at the Farmers Insurance Open in January before playing at Saudi International. Despite qualifying to play in both of the first two major championships this year – the Masters and the PGA Championship – Michelson did not attend. The absence of the six-time big winner at the PGA Championships came as a bit of a surprise as he only entered the field a week before retiring to defend his title.
