HBO’s “next to” It racked up 25 Emmy nominations on Tuesday morning — and it broke the record for most acting nominations in a single year.
The much-celebrated series about the inner workings of an uber-rich family earned 14 nominations in acting categories, enough to beat previous record holders “Roots” and “Rich Man, Poor Man” with 13 nominations each.
The principal actors were all recognized: Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong for lead actor, drama; J for supporting actress. Smith-Cameron and Sarah Snook; and co-starring Nicholas Brown, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen. Hope Davis, Sana Lathan and Harriet Walter were recognized as Guest Actress in a Drama, while Adrien Brody, James Cromwell, Ariane Moyet and Alexander Skarsgård were recognized as Guest Actor in a Drama.
Given the love the Academy has shown “Heir” in the past, making history shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. It received 18 nominations for its second season last year. Earlier this year, the third season won a SAG Award for Ensemble Cast (which Brian Cox told us All the accolades meant to him include a Producers Guild Award for Drama Series, two Writers Guild Awards and a Directors Guild Award for Drama Direction.
Production on season 4 began in June, with the first episode directed by Mark Milot. HBO released this statement about the new season’s plot: “In the 10-episode season 4, the sale of media company Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson is even closer. The prospect of this seismic sale sparks existential angst and familial estrangement between the Roys as they wonder what their lives will look like once the deal is done. A power struggle occurs as the family weighs a future where their cultural and political weight is drastically reduced.
